Release of New 100 Rupee Coin in India launched by RBI
Let’s first talk about coins. There are two types of coins released by the Reserve Bank of India:
- Circulation Coins
- Commemorative Coins
Circulation Coins
Circulation coins are the ones that RBI issues for day-to-day transactions like different denominations of 1 rupee, 2 rupees, 5 rupees and 10 rupees. These coins serve as the general currency in circulation..
Commemorative Coins
Commemorative coins are issued by the RBI to commemorate the birth or death anniversary of a personality, an event, organization or place. These coins aren’t meant for general circulation but can be issued up to Rs.1000 in denomination according to Coinage Act, 1906; however, this has been quite rare.
This commemorative coin is to be sold at prices of Rs 3300-Rs 3500. According to the media, this commemorative coin will not be in circulation and can only be bought directly from Mints outlets.
Till now two times 100 Rupee Coins were being released to honour some leaders. They are
- Atal Bihari Vajpayee
- Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia
Prime Minister Narendra Modi released new Rs 100 coin on birth centenary of Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia
In October 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi released a commemorative coin of Rs 100 denomination to celebrate the birth centenary of Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia. He also paid tributes to her via video conference.
The Prime Minister said he was lucky enough to have the opportunity to release a special coin worth 100 rupees in honor of Beloved Mother Vijaya Raje Scindia. Referring to Mom’s book, he said in it, she introduced him as an activist leader from Gujarat and today after so many years, he is serving as Pradhan Sevak for this country!
Who is Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia?
Vijaya Raje Scindia, born Lekha Devi and known popularly as the Maharani of Gwalior, was an eminent Indian political personality. In the days of British rule in India, during her marriage to the last ruling Maharaja/Maharajadhiraja Jivajirao Scindia II (1888-1943), she ranked among one of India’s highest royal figures. Hers was a life totally dedicated to Jan Seva. She was bold and kind, if the BJP has emerged as a Party that people trust it is because of stalwarts like Rajmata Ji who worked among people and strengthened the party.
PM Narendra Modi released Rs 100 coin in memory of Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his 94th Birth Anniversary
in December 2018, PM Narendra Modi released a commemorative coin worth Rs. 100 today in honour of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who died this year. The release was one day before his 94th birth anniversary and he said, “The mind is not ready to believe that Atal Ji is no longer with us.” He was loved and respected across all sections of society.
Who is Atal Bihari Vajpayee?
Atal Bihari Vajpayee was an Indian politician who served three terms as the prime minister of India, first for a term of 13 days in 1996, then for a period of 13 months from 1998 to 1999. He later served one full-term during his time with Bharatiya Janata Party.
